ABOUT ABOUT

Learn how to paint Pysanky eggs with Heather Hogan-Spencer of The Bodhi Tree. Create & Connect is an adult art program that features a variety of talented teachers demonstrating their skills in a small intimate group setting.

The name for these Easter eggs—pysanka in the singular and pysanky as plural—is derived from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, which means “to write,” or писати in Ukrainian. So in this case, the word refers to the writing on the eggs. While many Christians might be familiar with dying Easter eggs with solid colors, Ukrainian Easter eggs often feature complex geometric and floral designs.

Heather Hogan-Spencer is a graduate of Marywood University with a B.A. in Graphic Design and an M.A. in Studio Art. Her recent work includes teaching at the Bodhi Tree, children’s magazine illustration and food styling, sculpture, painting, graphic design and photography. Heather is currently serving on the board of the Wayne County Arts Alliance.
